Investigating robberies in Utica, about 240 miles northwest of Manhattan, two young people were stopped by police on Friday night. This led to the shooting.
According to authorities, they were contacted because their descriptions “matched those of the robbery suspects.”
Chief of Police Mark Williams of Utica informed reporters that one of them bolted and then pointed what looked to be a weapon at the cops.
A child is seen on social media being chased by an officer, who wrestles him to the ground.
There’s a gunshot heard as two more officers approach them.
An onlooker remarks, “Oh my god, he just shot him.”
One of the officers shot the youngster once, striking him in the chest, according to Mr. Williams.
First aid was administered at the site to the teenager, who was later identified in local media as Nyah Mway, a refugee from Myanmar, but who passed away in a hospital.
According to Mr. Williams, police found a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun replica with a detachable magazine.
“Glock markings, signatures, a detachable magazine, and serial numbers” were present on the dummy, according to police spokesperson Lieutenant Michael Curley.
