The city is just 20 miles away from Paradise, which was severely damaged and lost 85 people to the Camp Fire in 2018. In the years that followed, the area saw further fires.
Robert Foxworthy, a spokesperson for CalFire, told the news that although the fire was not spreading due to lower wind speeds, the “biggest factor” affecting firefighters was the heat, which was expected to reach 110F (43C) on Thursday.
After the fire started, many locals were still unable to go back to their homes.
The San Francisco Chronicle was informed by Louisiana native and new transplant to California, Brittanie Hardie, that she was not home when her partner left their apartment.
“I knew California had wildfires, but I had no idea it was this bad,” Hardie said to the newspaper.
Shawn Webber, a member of the Oroville City Council, shared a video of smoking hillsides on both sides of a road on Facebook on Wednesday. He also complimented the firemen for stopping more damage.
