A thorough report on the ongoing violence in Manipur, India, which started in May 2023, has been made available by Amnesty International. Over 200 people have died and over 60,000 have been displaced in the last 400 days due to the fighting between the Kuki and Meitei tribes.
The ruling party’s inability to adequately handle the issue and defend human rights in the state is highlighted in the study. Residents of Manipur are afraid and anxious as a result of the state’s incapacity to maintain public safety and hold offenders accountable, according to the chairman of Amnesty International for India.
The study also mentioned cases of media repression, such as the September 2023 police complaint against three Editors Guild of India fact-finding team journalists for using social media to report on the violence.
