Police officers were attacked and injured, and anti-immigrant demonstrators clashed with counter-protesters.
Protests were conducted in Bristol, Leeds, Sunderland, and Blackpool on Saturday, with more demonstrations in Stoke-on-Trent, Manchester, and Hull.
Some of the greatest violence occurred in Liverpool, when two police officers were rushed to the hospital with suspected broken jaws and noses.
Scuffles erupted in Nottingham’s Market Square as rival groups clashed, with bottles and other things thrown from both sides, and cries of “England till I die” drowned out by counter-protesters’ boos.
Meanwhile, in Belfast, fireworks were let off during fierce clashes between an anti-Islamic group and an anti-racism rally.
Police have warned that further violence is likely in the coming days.
“We know people will try to do this again, and policing has been and will continue to be ready,” said Chief Constable BJ Harrington, who represents the National Police Chiefs’ Council on public order.
