ISLAMABAD According to sources who spoke with Geo News on Thursday, President Asif Zardari has not yet approved the Elections Act (Amendment Bill) 2024, which seeks to prevent independent MPs from switching parties.
According to insiders, the president will sign the proposed bill into law after conferring with legal professionals.
They added that as soon as the bill is signed, the Senate Secretariat will publish a notice in the gazette.
The Supreme Court has heard a challenge to the bill from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which makes retroactive changes to the Elections Act of 2017.
In the meantime, the ruling coalition and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) have also petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn its July 12 order regarding the PTI’s allocation of reserved seats in the National Assembly, a case that coincides with the adoption of the aforementioned bill.
