One of the attackers who attacked the USS Wasp-affiliated marines in Izmir covered a service member’s head with a sack.
The two were shown on camera being encircled by a crowd of people yelling “Yankee go home” on a crowded street.
After securing one of the marines, a bag was put over his head.
The US Navy said in a statement that additional marines intervened, no one was hurt, and the service personnel eventually returned to their ship.
As a precaution, a hospital was consulted for the two marines.
We are disturbed by this attack on US service men and are grateful that Turkish police are treating this situation seriously and holding those responsible accountable, according to National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett.
Suleyman Elban, the governor of Izmir province, said: “On Monday, September 2, 2024, at around 4pm, two US citizen military personnel in civilian clothes were physically attacked by a group of 15 people, two women and 13 men, who are members of the Turkish Youth Union (TGB)”.
