ISLAMABAD: The Senate on Thursday, over protests from opposition benches, passed the “Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024” with a majority vote, two days ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) much-anticipated public gathering in the federal capital on September 8.
Leaders and staff of the opposition party have been criticizing the senior leadership for their inability to organize the public meeting in Islamabad.
The local government canceled the no-objection certificate (NOC) and barricaded the roads leading to the federal capital, citing security concerns. As a result, the previous ruling party abruptly called off its August 22 “Islamabad Jalsa” and rescheduled it for September 8.
