German detectives suspect Christian B, whose last name cannot be disclosed owing to German privacy rules, of kidnapping and murdering three-year-old Madeleine McCann from her parent’s vacation rental in Portugal in 2007.
For a variety of unrelated sex offenses committed in Portugal, such as three rapes and two instances of self-exposure and public masturbation in front of minors, Christian B is presently on trial.
Laurentiu Codin, a 50-year-old Romanian national who shared a cell with Christian B in 2020, spoke at Braunschweig Regional Court on Tuesday and related a scenario that mirrored the night Madeleine vanished.
He informed me that he had committed theft in Portugal. “He was in an area of hotels where people live—I’m not sure how you say it—rich people,” he said.
“And he informed me that there was an open window somewhere while he was in the neighborhood of the affluent people’s hotels, which is why he asked me if fingerprints could be left when he went out the window.
“He stated that he entered the apartment out of need for money. He claimed that although he didn’t locate any money, he did find a child and grabbed it. Two hours later, police and dogs encircled his location.
