Significant changes to the Police Act have been passed by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government, depriving the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of important authorities.
Among the powers are the ability to transfer and appoint top police officers. This action was taken after the amendments that were scheduled to be presented to the KP Assembly were approved by the provincial government during its meeting today.
The changes eliminated the authority given to the IGP in 2017 by Pervaiz Khattak’s administration. The chief minister, not the IGP, will now have the power to appoint and transfer top police personnel, including extra IGs, DIGs, district police officers, and regional police officers, according to the new legislation.
