Russia Strikes Ukraine Energy Facilities, Killing Three Amid Massive Drone and Missile Attack

Russia hits Ukraine energy facilities with 450+ drones and missiles, killing three and causing massive power outages. Zelenskiy urges stronger sanctions.

Russia launched a major overnight assault on Ukraine, targeting energy infrastructure and residential areas, leaving at least three people dead and several injured. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reported that more than 450 drones and 45 missiles were launched in the attacks.

In Dnipro, a drone strike on an apartment building killed two people and wounded 12, while one person was killed in the Kharkiv region. Key energy facilities in Kyiv, Poltava, and Kharkiv suffered significant damage, forcing state-owned Tsentrenergo to halt operations at its plants in Kyiv and Kharkiv. The company described the strikes as the largest since the war began in February 2022, leaving Ukraine’s power generation at zero.

Zelenskiy called for stronger international sanctions against Russia, emphasizing that attacks targeting civilians and energy infrastructure must be met with no-exception energy sanctions.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed the strikes targeted weapons production and energy sites in retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory. The Russian military also reported gains near Pokrovsk and Kupiansk and captured a small village in eastern Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Air Force intercepted 406 drones and nine missiles, but 26 missiles and 52 drones still hit 25 sites. Authorities are working to restore electricity, water, and heating, while cities like Kremenchuk and Horishni Plavni rely on generators amid widespread power outages.
