With 160 cases reported so far this year, diphtheria is swiftly spreading throughout Sindh, according to the Sindh Health Department. The condition is hazardous, as evidenced by the alarming 28 deaths that have been linked to it.
Diphtheria spreads more quickly than the coronavirus, according to Dr. Khalid Shafi, Secretary General of the Pakistan Pediatrics Association. Nevertheless, there are vaccines that can effectively prevent the condition.
“Vaccination is an easy way to control diphtheria,” Dr. Shafi noted, adding that the disease hasn’t been observed in Pakistan in 20 to 30 years.
In order to prevent the disease, he underlined the significance of immunizing children at six, ten, and fourteen weeks of age.
According to Dr. Shafi, immunizations can lower the risk of catching diphtheria by 99.9%.
