Monday’s parliamentary committee meeting in Jerusalem was stormed by a group of families of Israelis who were being held captive in Gaza by Hamas. They demanded that the MPs take further action to try and release their loved ones.
The demonstration by perhaps twenty persons in the fourth month of the Gaza conflict against Hamas indicated a growing discontent at home.
After a truce was agreed upon by Israel and Hamas in November 2023, around 130 Israelis are still being held captive.
Efforts by the US, Qatar, and Egypt to negotiate another release appear to be a long way from reconciling Israel’s determination to destroy Hamas with the latter’s insistence that Israel evacuate and release all thousands of Palestinian prisoners from its prisons.
