KARACHI: According to his family and the Athletics Federation of Pakistan, Malik Muhammad Younis, one of Pakistan’s most renowned middle-distance runners whose national records have stood for almost 50 years, died on Tuesday from a heart attack.
He was seventy-seven.
Many people consider Younis to be a pioneer in Pakistani athletics. During the 1970s, Younis competed internationally in the 800 and 1500 meters. Younis, who is renowned for his speed and stamina, won 27 gold medals abroad and 56 gold medals at home. Among his most noteworthy triumphs are a gold medal from the 1974 Asian Games in Tehran and a gold and silver podium finish from the 1973 Asian Track & Field Championships in Manila.
