Your initial reaction could be to flee if you saw a huge, lethal funnel-web spider perched on her egg sac.
In order to create life-saving antivenom, the Australian Reptile Park in New South Wales is advising people in neighboring Sydney to stifle their anxiety, maintain composure, and gently gather the spider and her eggs in a safe container.
The most hazardous species of funnel webs, which are found in and around Sydney, are notorious for their lethal, quickly acting venom. Thirteen people lost their lives to funnel-web attacks prior to the introduction of antivenom in 1981. No one has died since it was first introduced.
