Reports state that Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, the head of the opposition in Somaliland, has been elected president of the breakaway province of Somalia.
According to local media and The Associated Press news agency, the Somaliland National Electoral Commission (NEC) said on Tuesday that Abdullahi, also known as Irro, of the Waddani Party had over 64 percent of the vote, defeating incumbent President Muse Bihi Abdi of the Kulmiye Party.
Last week, voters in the breakaway part of Somalia cast ballots in an election that had been postponed for two years for a variety of reasons, including a shortage of financing.
With almost 35 percent of the vote, Abdi, who was running for a second term after serving seven years in government, fell far behind.
During their campaigns, both candidates pledged to revive a sick person.
