According to The News on Wednesday, experts are concerned about a rapid increase in genetic illnesses in the nation as a result of a high percentage of cousin marriages.
In Pakistan, cousin weddings make up over 65% of all marriages, and in some communities, that percentage might even reach 85%.
The experts cautioned that Pakistan was one of the countries with the greatest percentage of consanguineous marriages in the world during their presentation at the Swiss-Pakistan Workshop on “Genomic Disorder and Recessive Disorder” at the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS).
The event, which took place Tuesday at Dow International Medical College’s Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan Auditorium, brought together specialists from Pakistan and Switzerland to talk about the effects of genetic abnormalities brought on by cousin marriages.
