Foot traffic data indicates that compared to last year, Boxing Day consumers are avoiding the High Street and shopping malls.
According to data collected by MRI Software, as of 17:00 GMT, morning foot traffic on UK high streets has decreased by 10.1% compared to 2023, while retail centers have suffered a 6.1% decline in patronage.
The preliminary numbers indicate that traditional Boxing Day sales are still dominated by online shopping.
Major retailers like John Lewis, M&S, and Next have decided not to open most of their stores on Thursday, citing a desire to give their employees a rest during the holiday season, even though many outlets are still anticipated to generate strong sales.
