In the deep south of the United States, an unusual winter storm is dumping snow and freezing rain, halting airports and highways in Texas, triggering a blizzard warning in Louisiana, and breaking records in Florida.
Areas famed for warm winters are struck by snow, ice, and sleet, and at least nine people are believed to have perished from cold exposure and road accidents brought on by the storm.
Another storm has already dumped 18 inches (45 cm) of snow on areas of New York state in the country’s north.
According to internet tracker Flight Aware, more than 1,600 flights within the United States were canceled and 1,765 were delayed on Wednesday morning.
