BEIJING: As the yearly “Plum Rains” left a path of devastation and forced thousands of rescue workers to mobilize in order to rescue people from flooding, China’s north and west prepared for further flash floods and landslides on Thursday.
As the rains spread from the southwest province of Sichuan through the northwest province of Gansu and up to the northeastern province of Liaoning, red alerts were issued.
However, late Wednesday and early Thursday saw flight delays and cancellations at one of the city’s airports, as well as the suspension of certain trains headed for Beijing.
As they threaten to overrun aging flood defenses, extreme rainfall and severe flooding—which meteorologists attribute to climate change—present significant difficulties for policymakers.
