WASHINGTON: Two government officials with firsthand knowledge of the situation said that if Elon Musk leaves the Department of Government Efficiency, members of President Donald Trump’s cabinet will probably take steps to reduce the power of DOGE staff members and regain authority over hiring and budgeting.
Under the leadership of billionaire Musk and established by executive order the day Trump took office, the Department of Government Efficiency has led initiatives to reduce the federal workforce and lower the deficit through mass layoffs, contract cancellations, and a reduction in services provided to Americans throughout the federal government.
However, Musk announced on Tuesday that he would only be working for the government one or two days a week in order to concentrate on his struggling automaker Tasla.
