SYDNEY—As voters’ concerns about US President Donald Trump’s influence fueled a stunning comeback against once-resurgent conservatives, Australia’s Anthony Albanese announced a historic second term as prime minister on Saturday.
Like Canadian conservatives and their leader, whose election loss was similarly ascribed to a Trump backlash, Peter Dutton, the head of the conservative Liberal party, admitted defeat and the loss of his own seat.
As Albanese declared victory and said that Labor will create a majority government, supporters at Labor’s Sydney election party applauded and embraced one another.
