The outages, which include two in the last week, occur as flying-related fear has increased during an already turbulent year that has seen a fatal collision and multiple near-misses.
The Federal Aviation Administration announced on Sunday morning that it had grounded planes to Newark due to a “telecommunications issue” that was affecting controllers at Philadelphia TRACON Area C. According to FAA aviation traffic warnings, the ground stop lasted around forty-five minutes. The transportation department claims that a backup system took over in this instance.
The TRACON experienced another 90-second radio and radar outage early Friday morning. Both events come after an outage that occurred at the same control center last month on a busy April afternoon.
