The disputed Kashmir region has been designated as a significant conflict escalation hotspot by the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025, which warns that there is a high probability of new conflict in the area in the upcoming year.
According to the analysis, the conflict-risk indicators used by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) indicate that there is a significant chance that the Kashmir dispute would rapidly worsen. The seriousness of the situation was highlighted by a four-day military conflict from May 7–10 that was the worst escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors in a number of years.
The GPI cautions that a conventional fight in Indian Illegally Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) might still result in massive battlefield losses and risks extending beyond the disputed Himalayan territory, even though it believes a purposeful nuclear exchange is extremely unlikely.
