ISLAMABAD: On Tuesday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered the federal government to set up a commission to look into cases involving blasphemy within 30 days.
The order was made by Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan during the hearing of petitions to establish an investigation commission to look into the use of blasphemy laws.
The court granted the petitions and mandated that the panel finish its work within four months of its establishment. The IHC also decided that the commission might seek the court for an extension if it needed additional time to finish its assignment.
767 people, primarily young males, were detained pending trial for blasphemy charges, according to a report released in October of last year by the government-run National Commission for Human Rights.
