JAKARTA: The Indonesian search and rescue agency reported on Tuesday that 11 people are still missing after a boat capsized in severe weather close to the Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra province.
Eight people have been taken to safety as a result of the Monday morning collision.
According to a statement from the rescue organization, the boat departed Sikakap for a nearby village in the Mentawai Islands with 18 persons on board, including 10 employees of the local government.
On Tuesday, dozens of rescuers and two boats were sent out to search for the missing.
In Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, boats and ferries are frequently used forms of transportation, and accidents resulting from inclement weather are somewhat frequent.
