Police and Southend London Airport said Sunday that a small plane had crashed at a London regional airport, prompting the airport to close.
At Southend-on-Sea, an airfield east of London, a 12-meter jet was seen on camera burning and emitting a black smoke plume.
A statement from Essex police described the situation as a “serious incident” and stated, “We are working with all emergency services at the scene now, and that work will be ongoing for several hours.”
A little before 4 p.m. local time (1500 GMT), police reported receiving an alarm. As a precaution, they also evacuated a rugby club and golf club in the area.
