The International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) historic advisory judgment on nations’ responsibilities with regard to climate change has been warmly received by Pakistan.
The ruling emphasized the global gravity of the climate situation and the legal obligations states have under international law to alleviate harm caused by climate change.
Mansoor Usman Awan, Pakistan’s attorney general, emphasized in court that preventing climate harm must be viewed as a shared responsibility when he delivered Pakistan’s oral arguments before the ICJ in April.
He had stated, “It is a duty that crosses national boundaries and requires every State to exercise extreme diligence.”
The court upheld a number of Pakistan’s important positions. First, the ICJ upheld the established rule that major environmental harm should be avoided.
