ISLAMABAD: During a meeting with Dr. Fouzia Siddiqui, the sister of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, on Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif gave her the assurance that the government would continue to offer all available legal and diplomatic help in the academic’s case.
In 2008, a New York federal district court indicted Dr. Aafia, a neuroscientist from Pakistan, on accusations of attempted murder and assault related to an incident that occurred during an interview with US authorities in Ghazni, Afghanistan. She rejected the claims.
She was detained for 18 months before being prosecuted, found guilty, and given an 86-year prison sentence in early 2010. Since then, she has been detained in the United States.
