BEIJING: Baoding, an industrial city on the outskirts of Beijing, has received over a year’s worth of rain from storms in northern China, forcing over 19,000 residents to evacuate their houses as highways are being cut off and streets start to flood.
In the 24 hours leading up to early Friday morning, Yi, in the western section of Baoding, received up to 447.4 mm (17.6 inches) of rain, and several meteorological stations in Hebei province—of which Baoding is a part—reset their records.
According to official records, Baoding receives more than 500 mm of rain annually on average.
According to a social media statement by the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), 6,171 houses and 19,453 individuals were evacuated.
