Several women in Lahore are learning various self-defense skills at the Pakistan Self-Defence Federation (PSDF) to prepare them to deal with any unforeseen event.
But what is self-defense? Many people feel that self-defense is fighting or wrestling, but it is actually the ability to avoid or protect oneself from any threat.
According to PSDF Major (retd) Jawad, self-defense is the ability to safely evacuate the “kill zone”.
“This is a technique [you can use] when you find yourself in a critical situation and need to safeguard your life and honour. “This skill of self-defense is critical for survival,” he stated.
Shajjia, a Kung Fu expert from Hunza, told News that while she is a pro in martial arts, she is also practicing self-defense to understand how to avoid any adverse event.
“As a martial arts player, I am learning self-defense, and any average girl should also master the techniques.
The women and girls taking self-defense classes at the PSDF stated that women from all walks of life will be able to protect themselves against any threat.
“We should always be mentally prepared and know what to do in any situation,” stated one of the participants in self-defense classes.
Another stated that anybody, regardless of age, should practice self-defense skills. She proposed that self-defense should be part of every school’s discourse.
A member of the PSDF said that women are naturally delicate compared to men but that doesn’t mean they can be suppressed. Therefore, every woman should know how to protect herself.
Some of the participants even shared that they had to face criticism over learning self-defence.
However, comprising 21 techniques to protect oneself, self-defence education is not only for women but also for young boys and even men in every society.
