Researchers in a new study discovered a link between smoking and abdominal fat, which eventually leads to ailments such as cardiovascular and diabetes, recommending individuals to quit smoking if they wish to lose weight.
The study, published in the journal Addiction, highlighted the visceral fat that promotes dementia, stroke, and heart disease. It found that lifetime smoking causes harmful fat to accumulate deep within the body.
People may not be overweight, yet they can have a lot of visceral fat.
A team from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark used Mendelian Randomisation (MR) to evaluate the fat distribution and the association between exposure, smoking, and abdominal fat.
