McCaughey managed Ulster Rugby and the Irish 7s team at the 2009 World Cup in addition to coaching Ulster and Ireland’s minor teams.
“I have been a passionate supporter of Ulster Rugby for over 40 years, and I am proud and delighted to be joining now as Interim CEO,” stated McCaughey.
Earlier this week, Petrie left the province with approval from both parties.
Following his retirement, McCaughey, who was previously the CEO of South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, has assumed positions with several nonprofit organizations. Most recently, in October 2022, he was appointed Chair of Crescendo.
In addition, he chaired the Ulster Rugby Academy from 2015 to 2019 and served as a school coach.
He has coached a number of players, including Andrew Trimble, Chris Henry, Tommy Bowe, Stephen Ferris, and Rory Best.
“Over the past decades I have been involved with Ulster Rugby in many guises, including coach, manager, player, and a vociferous supporter on the terraces, as well as influencing how the game is played, coached and governed at a club, provincial and national level,” said McCaughey.
