Authorities in the Australian city of Wagga Wagga have reported that they have discovered a horse slaughterhouse that killed over 500 horses and dumped their carcasses in different dumps in a dry creek bed.
Wagga “Once the inspection of the property commenced it became clear that the slaughtering of horses had been occurring for a long period of time,” the Wagga City Council said in a statement.
According to the Guardian story, the butchering was occurring at a private residence, which prompted a city council and North South Wales Police investigation.
The Protection of the Environment Operations Act will apply to the offenses.
During the investigation, officials reported found “several distinct dumping of carcasses throughout the property,
“Some of these carcasses were no more than skeletal remains while others were killed relatively recently,” the council stated.
“Once the extent of the operation had been identified NSW Police and other state government agencies began collecting evidence for possible offences and regulatory actions under a range of NSW state government legislation.”
