Increasing regional growth will be “top of the agenda” in Labour’s devolution plans if it wins the next general election, Sir Keir will tell the mayors at a meeting in the West Midlands. He also wants local leaders to be a “core part” of building their economies.
But given that shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves has pledged to enact strict “fiscal rules,” it is unlikely.
Before the first meeting, the leader of the Labour Party stated as follows: “The outcome of the local elections shows that the British public is willing to trust this reformed Labour Party.”
