The Democratic Alliance (DA), the main opposition party, has fiercely opposed it, accusing the president of signing the “death warrant” for South Africa’s healthcare system. The bill offers universal health care for everybody.
It issues a warning that corruption may increase and the plan could be extremely costly.
What is stated in the law?
The National Health Insurance (NHI) program promotes the establishment of a state fund to pay for all South Africans’ medical expenses, the majority of whom are not currently insured.
In a highly controversial move, it also forbids people from using commercial health insurance to pay for therapy that is funded by the fund.
