Though it’s only slightly bigger than your thumb, the western chorus frog might pose a significant challenge to Premier Doug Ford’s ambitions to construct Highway 413. On Canada’s official listing of species at risk, the chorus frog—so named because of the sound males produce during mating season—is classified as threatened. The frog can be found on the 59-kilometer recommended route of the proposed Highway 413, which crosses the northwest boundaries of the Greater Toronto Area, according to consultants employed by Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation. The province might be forced to alter the planned highway’s path in order to protect habitat, even if the frogs’ presence along the route may not necessarily mean the end of the project.
