Following an assault against Hamas’ leadership over the weekend that resulted in the deaths of numerous Palestinians tented in a designated “safe zone,” Israel launched strikes on the southern and central Gaza Strip on Monday in an effort to increase pressure on the group.
Redisplaced survivors said they had no idea where to go next, two days after an Israeli strike reduced a bustling area of Mawasi near the Mediterranean coast into a scorched wasteland scattered with burning cars and mutilated bodies.
Aya Mohammad, 30, a market vendor in Mawasi who was contacted by mobile text message, stated, “Those moments as the ground shook underneath my feet and the dust and sand rose to the sky and I saw dismembered bodies – was like nothing I have seen in my life.”
