The TV star’s son has been diagnosed with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM).
“4 weeks ago, what appeared to be a normal virus for our son, turned into a nightmare,” Sigler wrote on Instagram Tuesday. “Beau has what we think to be, ADEM. To say this has been difficult is an understatement, and I’ve never felt so broken.
ADEM is an extremely unusual neurological immune reaction that some children can get after receiving a mild infection. “They compared it to getting struck by lightning,” Sigler said in an episode of “MeSsy with Christina Applegate & Jamie-Lynn Sigler,” underscoring how uncommon the ailment is.
Her 10-year-old son had not been feeling well in the days preceding the diagnosis. Beau once had a 105-degree fever, and Sigler’s husband took him to the hospital while he wailed that his head hurt. Sigler’s son went to the ER three times over the next few days, only to be released home after tests.
