The Indian Supreme Court affirmed the repeal of Article 370 in December 2023 and mandated elections in Jammu & Kashmir. But the electoral landscape has changed drastically as a result of recent government moves.
The central government curtailed Jammu and Kashmir’s state status’s autonomous powers before the elections. The Lieutenant Governor was granted additional authority, a decision that has been opposed by many Kashmiris.
There has been debate regarding the distribution of assembly seats. Jammu has been given more seats in parliament despite having a smaller population, which has sparked complaints about incorrect delimitation and unrest in Kashmir.
For electoral success, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) greatly depends on support from Jammu.
