Echoes of the #MeToo movement seem to be reaching a high point in an industry that was essentially ignored in 2017, with scores of lawsuits filed against Diddy in the last year and an estimated 100+ more victims set to bring new complaints.
Although the music business may be facing a #MeToo moment, Diddy’s recent legal issues with federal criminal courts were not the reason behind the demand for accountability, according to San Diego criminal defense attorney David P. Shapiro.
Sexual assault victims have been taken advantage of and denied a voice for far too long.
They were afraid that no one would take them seriously and that society would always support their strong abuser,” Shapiro remarked. “The #MeToo movement has been extremely helpful in supporting the real victims of sexual abuse and exploitation at the hands and will of strong men, but it has also confirmed worries about overcorrection and blindly accepting the word of a complainant—even when it contradicts reason and reality.
