As per the findings of a comprehensive study released on Wednesday, men can use the commonly prescribed diabetes medication metformin without worrying about resulting in birth problems in their offspring.
Researchers that monitored over three million pregnancies in Taiwan and Norway discovered no correlation between metformin use by dads during the three months leading up to conception, when sperm are developing, and birth abnormalities.
The initial medication administered for Type 2 diabetes, which is by far the most common form of the condition, is usually metformin, a reasonably priced generic medication.
According to a Danish study from 2022, boys whose fathers took metformin had a 1.4 times higher chance of birth abnormalities. Subsequent research has not validated that correlation.
