LONDON: Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has stated that judicial independence is crucial to any society’s advancement and survival through the upholding and application of the rule of law.
Speaking at the Annual Law Conference, the IHC judge was sponsored by International Lawyers (global), a group of lawyers from Pakistani ancestry who practice as solicitors and barristers in the UK.
The seminar was hosted at the Society of Lincolns Inn, and speakers included IHC Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir and Justice (retired) Shahid Jamil, who just resigned from the Lahore High Court.
“Judicial independence is enshrined in our Constitution as a fundamental pillar in Pakistan,” stated Justice Jahangiri. The courts must be free from all forms of coercion and interference in order to maintain judicial independence.
