Alzheimer’s Drugs May Offer Limited Patient Benefit, New Analysis Finds High Cost and Limited Access Raise Questions A new independent analysis has found that so called breakthrough Alzheimer’s drugs are unlikely to deliver meaningful benefits for most patients. Researchers say the impact remains far below what is needed to improve daily life for people living with dementia. These drugs are approved in several countries. However, they are not funded by the NHS in the UK. Private treatment can cost around £90,000 for an 18 month course, making them unaffordable for most patients. How the Drugs Work The treatment targets a sticky substance called beta amyloid. This protein builds up between brain cells in Alzheimer’s disease and is linked to memory loss and cognitive decline. Scientists designed antibodies to identify and remove this protein from the brain. These antibodies work in a similar way to natural immune defenses that fight infections. Mixed Results From Clinical Trials Early attempts to remove amyloid failed to show results. More recent trials involving donanemab and lecanemab showed a small slowing of cognitive decline. Researchers described this as an important scientific step. It was the first time any treatment had shown an ability to slow brain deterioration in Alzheimer’s disease. Large Review Finds Limited Benefit The Cochrane Collaboration reviewed data from 17 studies involving more than 20,000 participants. The review found that amyloid removing drugs do slow the disease. However, the improvement was too small to make a noticeable difference in patients’ everyday lives. Safety Risks and Treatment Burden The drugs are also linked to serious side effects. Some patients experienced brain swelling and bleeding during treatment. In addition, the therapy requires regular infusions every two to four weeks. This creates a long term treatment burden for patients and healthcare systems. Scientific Debate Continues The findings have triggered disagreement among scientists. Some researchers believe the drugs represent real progress in treating Alzheimer’s disease. Others argue the clinical benefits are too small to justify widespread use.

Church in Wales grants permanent blessings to same-sex marriages Church vote makes blessing service permanent The Church in Wales voted permanently to allow same-sex marriages. This decision comes after a temporary agreement introduced in 2021 that allowed couples who were in civil partnerships or same-sex marriages to receive blessings at church services. With strong backing, the church's ruling body approved this measure. In their individual votes, bishops, clergy and laity all achieved the two-thirds majority required. The lay members were 48-8 in favor, and two abstained. The clergy voted by 32-7 with 5 abstentions. The decision was then unanimously confirmed by the bishops. The decision is made This ruling prohibits full wedding ceremonies in the Church of Wales for couples who are both same-sex. It permanently inserts a formal service of blessing into the Book of Common Prayer. Individual clergy can still refuse to participate in the blessings, if so desired. Senior church leaders provide support The debate was backed by several senior politicians. Bishops from St Asaph, Llandaff and St Asaph spoke out in favor. A bishop expressed concern about the impact of rejection on LGBT+ individuals who may have experienced family separation or long-term distress. One bishop stated that temporary blessings in the past showed "something good and beautiful" inside of the church. Some religious leaders also said that Jesus didn't speak against homosexual relationships directly. They argued the Christian message should be centered on quality relationships, not exclusion. Oppositions and concerns raised Some members were not in agreement with the decision. Some members warned that the change could cause further divisions in the Anglican church as well as the larger Anglican community. The move, according to opponents, could lead tensions between churches from other countries who hold traditional views about sexuality. Others argued the new change blurs marriage and blessings. There were concerns that this decision could conflict with the biblical teachings on marriage. Anglicans have a wider significance This decision illustrates the growing differences between Church in Wales, which offers similar blessing services and Anglican Churches that don't. The decision reflects the ongoing global debate about same-sex relationships within Christianity. Takeaway: While the Church in Wales now makes same-sex marriages blessings permanent and does not allow full church weddings, it has stopped short of fully allowing same-sex couples to have a traditional Church Wedding.

Australian Refinery Fire Disrupts Fuel Output, Petrol Supply May Tighten Major blaze hits refinery production units An “unprecedented” fire has broken out at an oil refinery operated by Viva Energy in Australia, forcing a partial shutdown of key fuel production units. Company chief executive Scott Wyatt confirmed that two petrol processing units were directly affected, while other parts of the facility remained operational. Petrol production reduced, safety checks ongoing Following the incident, petrol output has dropped as a precaution. Diesel and jet fuel production have also been scaled back to ensure safety while assessments continue. Wyatt said production would only be increased again once the site is confirmed safe to operate. Engineers are currently inspecting the damaged areas and monitoring conditions before restarting full operations. Fuel supply impact expected to be limited Australia depends heavily on imported refined fuels, mainly from Singapore, South Korea, and Malaysia. Experts say this global supply network helps reduce the risk of major shortages. A chemical engineering expert from the University of Sydney, Yuan Chen, noted that the diversified supply chain provides short term stability. However, he also warned that the situation reduces the country’s ability to absorb sudden supply shocks. Transport specialist Professor Hussein Dia from Swinburne University added that motorists are unlikely to face immediate shortages. Still, he cautioned that fuel reserves could become tighter if disruptions continue for longer periods. Local reaction to refinery fire Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj described the fire as highly unusual and said it had deeply shocked both the company and the local community. He said he had spoken with refinery management and confirmed the seriousness of the incident.

Sri Lanka sends home 238 Iranian sailors after US Submarine attack Rescue and return of Stranded Sailors Sri Lanka returned 238 Iranian sailors stranded in the country after an attack by a US sub near their waters. After the attack, the sailors were stuck for more than a month in Sri Lanka. Aruna Jayasekara, Deputy Minister of Defence confirmed on Wednesday night that 32 sailors and 206 crew from the Iranian warship Iris Dena as well as a group from Irins Bushehr had left Sri Lanka. After completing the necessary procedures, authorities arranged for special flights to safely return them to Iran. Deathly attack on Iranian Warship On 4 March, a US sub launched a torpedo at the Iranian navy vessel Iris Dena. This attack took place about 40 km off the southern coast of Sri Lanka. A powerful explosion caused by the strike sank a ship. The attack claimed the lives of 104 sailors. Rescue teams later recovered 84 corpses. Iran chartered a plane to take them home. The Second Vessel Needs to Dock Immediately The second Iranian vessel, Irins Bushehr requested an emergency docking at Sri Lanka a day after the attacks. It was a vessel with engine issues that needed immediate help. Sri Lankan officials allowed the vessel to dock in a port located near Trincomalee, in northeastern Sri Lanka after several hours of discussions. About 15 Iranians will remain behind to maintain and operate the vessel which is anchored. Sri Lanka: Humanitarian Aid Sri Lankan authorities issued 30 day visas for the sailors, and offered them shelter at navy and airforce camps. Anura Kumara dissanayake, the president of Sri Lanka, said that his country had acted for humanitarian reasons. Sri Lanka, he said, aims to safeguard lives and maintain its neutrality in international conflicts. Growing Regional Tensions The sinking by the United States of America, Israel and Iran, of Iris Dena occurred early on in their ongoing conflict. This attack was a significant escalation of tensions in the entire region. Iran launched strikes in retaliation for the attack against US-allied nations of the Middle East. Sri Lankan Neutral Stance Sri Lanka's non-alignment policy has been in place since 1948, when it gained independence. Sri Lanka continues to have balanced relations both with Iran and with the United States. The officials stressed that they were responding based on their humanitarian responsibilities, not political affiliation.

AI Model ‘Claude Mythos’ Raises Global Financial Security Concerns Finance ministers, central bankers, and leading financial experts have raised serious concerns about a powerful new AI model that could threaten global financial systems. The model, called Claude Mythos, was developed by Anthropic. Early testing shows it can detect and exploit weaknesses in major software systems. This has triggered urgent discussions among policymakers and financial leaders. Global Leaders Take the Threat Seriously At a recent meeting hosted by the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC, officials discussed the risks linked to this AI system. Canada’s Finance Minister, François-Philippe Champagne, said the issue demands global attention. He explained that unlike physical threats, AI risks are harder to predict and control. He stressed the need for strong safeguards. Governments want to ensure financial systems remain stable and secure against emerging digital threats. What Makes Claude Mythos Different Claude Mythos is part of Anthropic’s Claude AI family. It competes with systems like ChatGPT and Gemini. Researchers testing the model found it highly skilled in cyber-security tasks. It can uncover hidden software bugs and suggest ways to exploit them. Due to these risks, Anthropic has not released Mythos to the public. Instead, it shared limited access with major tech firms such as Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon Web Services, and CrowdStrike. This initiative, called Project Glasswing, aims to strengthen global software security before wider deployment. Experts Urge Caution, Not Panic Some cyber-security experts believe the concerns may be slightly overstated. They point out that the model has not undergone broad independent testing. The UK AI Security Institute reviewed a preview version. Its report confirmed that Mythos performs well in weak security environments. However, it does not appear vastly more advanced than earlier models like Claude Opus. Researchers also noted that similar AI tools will likely emerge in the near future. This suggests the issue is not limited to a single model. Banks Prepare for Real-World Testing Financial institutions are now preparing to test their systems against this AI. C. S. Venkatakrishnan, CEO of Barclays, said the situation requires close attention. He emphasized the need to identify vulnerabilities quickly and fix them before they can be exploited.

Doncic and Cunningham are now eligible for NBA Awards after Appeal Decision Changes in award rules based on appeal outcome After winning their respective appeals, Los Angeles Lakers' Luka Doncic (left) and Detroit Pistons' Cade Cunningham (right) are both eligible to receive major NBA awards at the end of this season. In order to be eligible for the NBA, players must play at least 65 games in a regular season. Doncic and Cunningham both played 64 regular season games, which was initially below the NBA limit. The two players challenged this rule by citing special circumstances surrounding their missing games. They were allowed to compete for awards after the league agreed with some of their arguments. Why games are missed Cunningham had to miss 12 games due to a lung collapse that required medical attention and recovery time. Doncic was forced to miss two games because his child was born in Slovenia. When evaluating their appeals, the NBA considered both cases valid. Back to the award race Both players are now eligible to be nominated for the top awards, such as Most Valuable Player or All NBA Team. Doncic had a great scoring season. He finished with the league's highest total of 2143 points. The Lakers were able to secure their place in the playoffs thanks to his performance. Cunningham had an outstanding year as well. Cunningham was second with 634 total assists and was a major factor in the Pistons' rise to the top in the Eastern Conference. One appeal rejected Some cases did not succeed. Anthony Edwards, the Minnesota Timberwolves' star who played 60 matches but was denied an exemption.

The controversy surrounding match incidents Barcelona has raised concerns following their Champions League elimination, claiming that key refereeing decision changed both legs' direction. They claim that the officials' mistakes directly affected the result of the match. The club believes that several incidents were handled incorrectly under the rules. Barcelona claims that in both games, important decisions were made against them during key moments of play. The red cards and the VAR decisions under scrutiny Pau Castrorsi was the first to be sent off after being found guilty of denying an obvious scoring opportunity. Eric Garcia was also shown a red in the second game after a pitch-side review led to the referee upgrading a yellow. Barcelona also questioned a decision involving Atletico defender Marc Pubill. He was accused of handling the ball in the penalty box, yet the game continued with no intervention by VAR or referee. These moments, according to the club, show inconsistent VAR use and decisions in both matches. Barcelona files formal complaint with UEFA Barcelona complained first after the first leg. They cited what they deemed a severe lack of VAR interventions. UEFA rejected this complaint later. The club filed a formal complaint after the second leg. The club claimed that several decisions were not in accordance with the rules of the game. Barcelona said that officials had also applied rules incorrectly to several important situations. The repeated mistakes had an impact on match results, causing both financial and sporting damage. Reaction of players and clubs Raphinha was a forward who had missed both games due to an injury. She strongly criticised refereeing in the aftermath of the second match. He called the decision-making unfair, and said that it felt like the referees had robbed both matches. Later, the club released a press release stating that they were willing to collaborate with UEFA in order to improve standards of refereeing. The club stressed that VAR should be used more fairly and transparently, and the match officials must also follow this. Club position and result Barcelona insists that refereeing errors, not pure athletic performance, determined the result. The group continues to call for a review of the officiating standard in all major tournaments.

Prince Andrew is urged to give up his historic city honour Prince Andrew (also known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor) has been invited formally by city councilors to give his Freedom of the City of London. This request follows increasing pressure from officials who want to separate the city of London institution from controversial figure. Andrew was awarded the honor in 2012. The honour was bestowed on Andrew in 2012. The Honour cannot be removed directly City of London Corporation has confirmed it doesn't have legal authority to revoke such a type of Freedom. Officials have explained that honors handed down through the family are not approved or endorsed by members of parliament, limiting their ability to act. Councillors decided instead to ask Andrew to resign voluntarily by writing to him. The council will review his response at a later meeting, before making any further decisions. Freedom of the City: Background Freedom of the City of London has a long-standing tradition. Once, it allowed the recipient to move sheep without having to pay a fee across London Bridge. It is mostly symbolic today and given to individuals who have made a mark in their respective fields. This honour was also given to public figures such as Lenny Henry, Cate Blanchett and others in recognition for their contribution. Ongoing Controversies Surrounding Andrew Andrew's image has suffered a serious blow in the last few years. After more information about Jeffrey Epstein's links with King Charles III, the king removed all of his titles and roles. Andrew was arrested earlier this year on suspicion of misconduct while in public office. He was linked to so-called Epstein files in reports, raising concerns that he might have disclosed sensitive business information. After several hours of detention, he was released under investigation. The pressure for action is increasing The calls to remove Andrew’s honorary title have increased. The critics claim that the institution's reputation is damaged by the honorary title. Due to legal limitations, the official can only ask him to relinquish his title. Andrew's decision to renounce the honor depends now on his willingness.

US-Kuwaiti Journalist Detained Over Social Media Posts According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, an American-Kuwaiti Journalist was detained by Kuwaiti authorities after sharing content online related to the conflict between the United States and Israel as well as Iran. Reporter Missing since March Ahmed Shihab Eldin, an acclaimed media commentator, hasn't been seen since the 2nd of March. Authorities detained him while he was visiting his family in Kuwait. According to the watchdog group, he faces several charges including spreading false news. Kuwaiti officials have yet to make a statement publicly about this case. The War Content Charge According to reports, the accusations stemmed from online posts Shihab Eldin shared. A video of a US F-15 fighter plane crashing in Kuwait City was included. The images he shared allegedly show a pilot that had ejected from his aircraft and land in Al-Jahra. The authorities accuse him that he has misused his phone and harmed national security. These charges, say rights groups, are often vague and used as a way to limit independent reporting. Increased crackdown on online content Kuwait and the other Gulf states have tightened their controls over online activity. Officials warned the public not to post videos and images that are unverified, particularly those associated with military operations. Authorities in the area have arrested several people for sharing footage showing Iranian drone and missile attacks. Anyone found guilty of spreading misleading or false information regarding military issues could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison under current law. Kuwait Reports Casualties Kuwaiti officials claim that Iranian attacks caused many deaths. Three civilians, as well as two soldiers and two borderguards are among the dead. Six US military personnel have also reportedly been killed in Iraq. Instances involving military gear have occurred as well. Kuwait's Air Defense Systems accidentally shot down 3 US fighter planes during this conflict. Demands for immediate Release The Committee to Protect Journalists urged Kuwaiti officials to immediately release Shihab Eldin and to drop all charges. According to the group, his arrest is indicative of a trend where national security laws are being used more and more often as a way to silence journalists or control their information.

Iran’s Khamenei Refuses US Cooperation While Washington Supports Israel

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei says Tehran will not cooperate with the US unless it stops supporting Israel and withdraws its military presence from the region.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated on Monday that Tehran would only consider working with the United States if Washington changed its stance in the Middle East, including ending support for Israel.

Khamenei said, “If they completely stop backing the Zionist regime, withdraw their military bases from this region, and refrain from interference, cooperation could be possible. The arrogant nature of the United States accepts nothing but submission.”

In June, Israel launched a major bombing campaign targeting Iran, leading to a brief US involvement with strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. The 12-day conflict, which included Iranian missile and drone responses, disrupted ongoing nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington that began in April. A ceasefire has been in place since June 24.

Khamenei emphasized that strengthening the nation would deter enemies, stating, “If the country becomes strong and the enemy sees that confrontation only leads to loss, Iran will gain immunity.”

Iran continues to face economic pressure from long-standing international sanctions. The US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018 and reinstated sanctions, which were further reinforced by the UN in September after Britain, France, and Germany triggered the snapback mechanism.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Al Jazeera that Tehran is ready to resume negotiations with the US, but strictly on its nuclear program, excluding missile issues. He added that talks could restart “whenever the Americans are ready to negotiate on an equal footing,” noting that neither side is rushing.
