A wildfire close to Southern California’s famous coastline is rapidly growing, forcing locals to evacuate as flames threaten residences, businesses, and even the Malibu Pier, leaving the beaches deserted. Students at nearby Pepperdine University were forced to stay indoors for hours while observing the distant flames, so the school postponed classes on Tuesday.
The Franklin Fire started late Monday night and for a while burned through an area the size of five football fields every minute. Because of how fierce the fire is, the surrounding weather is changing and the already harsh conditions are getting worse.
The Los Angeles National Weather Service issued a warning Tuesday morning, saying, “The fire is burning so hot that it is modifying the local winds… (and) bending them towards and into the fire.”
