MADRID: A Madrid court sentenced former IMF leader and Spanish Economy Minister Rodrigo Rato to more than four years in prison for corruption, money laundering, and tax offenses on Friday.
The punishment follows a four-and-a-half-year jail sentence for financial mismanagement while employed at a bank in 2018 for the disgraced former heavyweight of Spain’s conservative Popular Party.
Rato was accused by the prosecution of defrauding the Spanish tax office and enriching himself with 8.5 million euros between 2005 and 2015.
According to a court statement, Rato was found guilty of “three offences against the Treasury, one offence of money laundering, and one offence of corruption between individuals.”
