Using notable developments in off-grid solar technology, African leaders and foreign donors promised Tuesday to supply electricity to an additional 300 million people in sub-Saharan Africa by 2030.
The World Bank and the African Development Bank (ADB) co-organized the African Energy Summit, which began Monday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and included the commitment.
The World Bank pledged between “$30-40 billion,” while the ADB contributed “$18 billion” to the project known as “Mission 300.” Both organizations made substantial financial commitments to the initiative.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that 570 million people out of 1.2 billion people worldwide would be without electricity in 2022, accounting for four-fifths of the world’s population.
