In an effort to foster cordial relations with Afghanistan’s de facto rulers, Russia’s Supreme Court on Thursday revoked the Taliban’s label as a “terrorist organization.”
When American forces backing Afghanistan’s internationally recognized government withdrew in August 2021, the organization took control of the country.
Since then, Moscow, which referred to the US withdrawal as a “failure,” has worked to normalize ties with the Taliban leadership, viewing them as a possible ally in the fight against terrorism and an economic partner.
According to the TASS official news agency, Supreme Court Judge Oleg Nefedov declared in a decision that “the previously established ban on the activities of the Taliban — included on the unified federal list of organizations recognized as terrorist — has been suspended.”
