KARACHI: Syed Waqar Mehdi of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) won Tuesday’s by-election for the Senate’s general seat, which is now vacant, from the province of Sindh.
A representative for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) stated that Mehdi received 111 votes, compared to 36 for Nighat Mirza of the MQM-P. According to the Returning Officer, Sindh Ejaz Anwar Chauhan, the Provincial Election Commissioner, two ballots were disqualified for incorrect marking.
The Sindh Assembly held the polling without a break from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 149 votes were cast during the allotted polling period.
Following the passing of Senator Taj Haider of the PPP, the general Senate seat from Sindh province became vacant.
