In an announcement on Sunday, US President Donald Trump announced he was ordering the Federal Bureau of Prisons to rebuild and reopen the notorious Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay in order to “house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders.”
He wrote, “REBUILD, AND OPEN ALCATRAZ!” on the Truth Social website. “When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm.”
Before it closed in 1963, infamous US criminals including Al Capone, were imprisoned at the federal penitentiary at Alcatraz. It is currently among the most visited tourist spots in San Francisco.
