Russian-installed authorities have convicted an Australian citizen who was taken prisoner by Russian forces while fighting with Ukraine to 13 years in a maximum security jail.
On Friday, a Russian-run court in occupied eastern Ukraine found 33-year-old Oscar Jenkins guilty of serving as a mercenary in an armed conflict.
Last December, a Melbourne teacher named Mr. Jenkins was apprehended in the Luhansk region.
He entered Ukraine in February 2024, according to the prosecution, and he was paid between 600,000 and 800,000 rubles (£5,504 and £7,339) per month to participate in armed engagements against Russian forces.
